Considering the lack of progress for the wine sector in free trade negotiations between the EU and the USA, especially on matters of protection of geographical indications and traditional appellations, the Assembly of European Wine Regions (AREV), of which 70 member regions recently unanimously adopted the attached resolution, are worried that a rapid compromise on customs duties may be agreed to the detriment of major non tariff related questions.

TTIP: No progress on crucial questions for the European wine sector

Considering the lack of progress for the wine sector in free trade negotiations between the EU and the USA, especially on matters of protection of geographical indications and traditional appellations, the Assembly of European Wine Regions (AREV), of which 70 member regions recently unanimously adopted the attached resolution, are worried that a rapid compromise on customs duties may be agreed to the detriment of major non tariff related questions.

In particular, AREV deplores the fact that the chapter on geographical indications has still not been addressed by formal negotiations and recalls that, for the wine sector, the European standards, that are more ambitious and backed up by those of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (IOVW), must not be sacrificed as being hindrances to free competition. The issues are thus especially consequential for the European vine and wine growing model. AREV urges the Commission not to derogate from the fundamental principles of European viticulture.
