Commissioner Ciolos receives the AREV
On 11 December, Dacian Ciolos, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, received an AREV delegation led by Jean-Paul Bachy, President, and Aly Leonardy, President of the AREV European Wine Trade Council (CEPV).
The AREV representatives were delighted with the Commissioner’s positive evaluation of the quality of the analysis in Prof. Montaigne’s study and his conclusions in favour of regularizing the production potential for all categories of wine. They noted the Commissioner’s desire to allow each member state to decide how to implement future planting authorizations in order to take into account the specific features of trade organizations in the different countries.
In order to offer political and trade decision-makers a dynamic tool for steering production potential, the representatives of the AREV suggested the creation of an Observatory of European Viticulture that would be in charge of compiling and analysing all relevant data for the sector.
After the meeting of the High Level Group on 14 December, the Commissioner will engage with the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament in order to establish the procedure and the precise calendar for implementing new measures. Now more than ever, the AREV reasserts its total vigilance with regard to the conclusions of the HLG and the means of implementing them.
The AREV delegation again announced how attached it is to seeing the European Wine Trade Council present on the Commission’s Advisory Group on Winegrowing.
